Frequently asked questions

Which caves in Africa are easiest to visit?

The Cango Caves, Sterkfontein and Echo Caves in South Africa have paths, lighting and guided tours. The Caves of Hercules in Morocco and Otjikoto Lake in Namibia are short, easy stops.

Do I need a guide?

At developed sites the guide is included in the ticket. At Sof Omar, Amboni and Kitum you should hire a local guide or ranger at the entrance.

Is it safe to visit caves with bats?

At managed show caves the risk is low. Avoid touching bats or their droppings, and stay out of chambers with large fruit-bat colonies unless the park authority says it is safe. See Caving safely.

How warm are African caves?

Cave temperature is close to the average annual temperature outside. The Cango Caves are about 18 °C, and lowland tropical caves are warmer and humid.

Can children visit?

Yes at Cango (heritage tour), Sterkfontein, Echo Caves and the Caves of Hercules. Routes with ladders or river crossings are not suitable for young children.

Where can I see hominin fossils?

The Maropeng visitor centre and the exhibition at Sterkfontein show casts and, at times, original fossils. See Human origins.

When is the Tsingy de Bemaraha open?

Roughly from May to November. The access road is closed in the rainy season.

Can I swim or dive at Chinhoyi or Otjikoto?

Swimming is not allowed at either site. Diving needs cave-diving qualifications and permission.

Is this website connected with DeepSeek, the AI company?

No. Deep Seek Africa is an independent guide. It has no connection with any artificial intelligence company or product, or with any site operator or tourist board.
